KEEP ON TRUCKIN’

The trucks come and go regularly at Pierce’s Park. Dump trucks routinely take away the materials that are to be recycled. P. Flanigan & Sons is committed to recycling as much as possible from the jobsite. Bill Beall, Site Superintendent, oversaw the careful removal of the topsoil and grass that was located on part of the land parcel identified for the construction of the park.

The concrete was pulled up off the parking lot that was included in the site. Under the concrete they hit a layer of asphalt. “I remember when we put that asphalt in for another parking lot many years ago,” said Bill. He’s been working for Flanigan since he was 18 years. All of the concrete and asphalt was put into dump trucks and taken to the Flanigan’s Winchester Recycling Facility. John Day has been driving a truck for L & J Construction for six years, “It’s my retirement job!” says John.

“When we moved to Cherry Hill in the 1950’s I remember that we had a dirt road and P. Flanigan & Sons trucks with big equipment came in to pave our streets.” said George Conway, a truck driver for Burley Construction. “I remember the big roller with steel wheels that compacted the white stones.” George credits that experience with generating his interest in construction where he has worked for most of his adult life. “Pierce Flanigan was a good man – he would take the time to talk to you,” recalled George. “I think a lot of a man who takes the time because not everybody does – he was a people person.”

The dumpster, also known as the “can” is filled with materials that Flanigan cannot reuse and it is taken to a processor who separates and recycles everything possible.

The traffic going in and out can cause lots of dirt to be pressed into the tires of the heavy equipment, so there is a 50’ long construction entrance layered with stones. By the time the trucks hit the streets, the mud and dirt are knocked off the tires. This is in keeping with Flanigan’s commitment to sound environmental practices.
